North Central Governors compare the atrocities in Rwanda to the Plateau massacres

Over 150 people were killed on Christmas Eve when gunmen stormed 25 towns spread across three local government districts in Plateau State.

The governors also urged the administration of President Bola Tinubu to investigate the reasons behind the recent murders in Plateau State.

Abdullahi Sule, a governor of Nasarawa State, warned against attributing the killings to herder-farmer conflicts and compared them to the genocide in Rwanda. The Tutsi minority ethnic group in Rwanda was wiped out during the 1994 genocide.

On Tuesday, January 2, 2023, Sule, the Chairman of the North Central Governors Forum, accompanied his colleagues to Jos to offer their condolences to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Sule stated that the crisis in Plateau State had lasted far too long and that it was past time the FG found a solution.

"We have seen a similar situation in Rwanda because I won't call what is happening in the Plateau a farmer-herder crisis," the governor declared.

It's not. We witnessed what transpired in Rwanda, and fortunately, all four of us governors were present. We listened to the Rwandan president as he described the bravery it took to truly invite all parties involved and investigate the underlying issues.

"We can't let a select group of people harm the rest of us out of self-interest. It's not about Fulani here. We are pleading with the federal government to help us and address the criminal issue.

He said that the purpose of the NCGF's visit to Plateau was to express sympathy to Governor Muftwang and motivate him to identify the underlying reason of the state's ongoing crisis.
